Inlays and onlays are used when a tooth has a cavity or damage that is too big for a filling but not big enough to need a crown; and whether an onlay or an inlay is used just depends on what part of the tooth is being restored. They are usually made of porcelain or gold and are custom-made in a lab before being permanently bonded to the tooth.

At Platinum Dental Care in St. George we use only the highest quality materials and most up-to-date procedures. Call us today for a consultation to see if onlays/inlays could help you.

How are onlays/inlays Placed?

Because onlays/inlays are custom-made, they require more than one appointment to complete. At the first appointment your tooth will be prepared, an impression of your mouth will be made, and a temporary restoration will be put on the tooth to protect it until your next visit. The impression will then be sent to a lab where the onlay/inlay will be made to fit your tooth exactly.

At your next appointment the temporary restoration will be removed and the inlay/onlay will be bonded permanently to your tooth.

What are the benefits of

Onlays/Inlays?

  • They preserve more of your natural tooth than a crown would

  • They strengthen the damaged tooth
  • They last longer than fillings
  • They can eliminate the tooth sensitivity that can happen with fillings
  • Porcelain onlays/inlays are custom-made to match the color of your other teeth and look completely natural
