A frenectomy is the removal of excess connective tissue, called frenum, in the mouth. One frenum attaches the tongue to the bottom of the mouth and other ones attach the lips to the gums between the upper and lower front teeth. We use a dental laser to perform frenectomies so that you’ll experience less pain, heal much quicker, and have less risk of infection than with traditional methods. It’s a simple and common procedure.

Who needs a frenectomy?
A frenectomy is often done as part of orthodontic treatment. It is usually recommended for children who have excess frenum tissue which is restricting movement or causing problems with speech or swallowing. This excess tissue can also cause gaps between the front teeth or lead to receding gums.
What can I do to recover after
In many instances there is little pain or swelling after a frenectomy. Our knowledgeable staff will explain how to care for your mouth while you heal depending on your procedure. We may have you:
- Take pain medication
- Swish with a mouthwash to help keep the area clean
- Eat soft foods for a day or two
- Use an ice pack for any swelling
- Avoid spicy or acidic food for a few days
